Global Network of Women’s Shelters (GNWS)
The Global Network of Women's Shelters is a global voice for survivors of violence against women and the shelters that serve them. We work to strengthen and unite the women’s shelter movement globally to end violence against women and their children.
The Global Network of Women's Shelters was founded in 2008 during the 1st World Conference of Women’s Shelters in Edmonton (Canada).
The GNWS Foundation is based in The Hague (The Netherlands).
The Chair is Bandana Rana from Nepal.
An important goal for GNWS is to strengthen continental and national networks because they are the carriers of the Global Network.

During the course of one day, nearly 8,000 women and children in
Canada were found to reside in one of the 627 shelters for abused women
operating across the country.
However, 338 women and 201
accompanying children were turned away from shelters due to a lack of
room and resources. In fact, 56 per cent of all reasons for a turn-away
was because the shelter in question was full.

Without mental stability, holding down a job and supporting a family just isn’t possible. Research shows more than half of homeless mothers experience mental health challenges, such as depression and anxiety. And the trauma their children face can potentially spell a lifetime of devastation. Our clinical staff provides individual, group, and family therapy for mothers and their children, crisis intervention, and addiction rehabilitation for mothers so they can cast off the heavy toll of mental health issues and make giant strides towards self-sufficiency.

The first women's shelter in the United States was likely established in St. Paul, Minnesota shortly after the first domestic violence hotline was established in the same location. However, other early locations include Rosie's Place in Boston, Massachusetts, which was opened in 1974 by Kip Tiernan, and the Atlanta Union Mission in Atlanta, opened by Elsie Huck.
Women's shelters evolved over time. Grassroots community advocates in the 1970s offered shelters as one of the first services for victims of intimate partner violence. At this time, most shelters were for emergencies and involved stays less than six months.[9] Volunteers and shelter workers offered legal and welfare referrals to women when they exited but contact afterwards was limited. More recent programs, such as those funded by the Violence Against Women Act, offer longer term stays for women. These locations, as well as Transitional housing, offer more services to women and their children. Another recent change is the increasing amount of shelters publicizing their locations to increase funding and visibility in the community.
